This week’s Speedo Tip of the Week comes from Erica Rose, the 2003 10K Open Water National Champion and the 1998 5K Open Water World Champion. In honor of USA Swimming’s National Open Water Championships taking place this weekend, Rose offers some advice on keeping a straight course during an open water race.

By far, one of the most challenging aspects of open water swimming is maintaining a reasonably straight course as you swim. This is something that gets easier the more swims you do, as long as it is something you work on every race.

If possible, it is best to get in the water and swim along at least a portion of a course before you actually race it. If you are able to do that, you can familiarize yourself with your surroundings so that you know what you'll encounter on the day of the race. Figure out where your buoys will be, and try to locate something on land that will guide you in a straight line. For example, you might notice that a radio tower is in line with the buoy you're aiming for, and you can use that tower as a reference point during the race. It is often difficult to see the buoys when you're racing, so instead of constantly trying to find them in the water, having a larger focus point on land can be helpful.

In some races, there aren't good man-made structures on land that you can see while you're swimming. If you're swimming in a lake in a park, for example, you might be surrounded only by trees. You can, however, use the same strategy. You might notice that some trees stand out above the others, and you will be able to see these while you swim.

I have one more hint that might help you save some time during the swim. Instead of stopping to look at your focus point every few strokes, try to incorporate sighting into your stroke. For example, when I swim in open water, I look up as I breathe to my right side. This allows me to maintain my rhythm, sight my course, and keep swimming continuously throughout a race. Every so often, if you absolutely cannot see and think you're getting off track, do a few breaststroke pulls, find your mark, and then get right back into your stroke.

Good luck with your swimming, and keep up the open water racing!
